What is a hand-painted kitchen?
A hand-painted kitchen is a type of finish that primes cabinets and doors before painting them by hand in the desired style.
There are a wide variety to choose from, including traditional, contemporary, weathered, sleek and cottage.
Kitchen cabinets and their door fronts can be hand-painted if they are made from MDF, bare, waxed, or lacquered wood as well as acrylic, melamine and foil-wrapped laminate.
Take a look at our extensive range of hand-painted kitchens, and how they look.
Are they durable?
All our hand-painted kitchens are durable and can last for decades, requiring only the occasional touchup.
Members in our specialist team of professional kitchen painters use high-quality materials to ensure the best finish is achieved.
What is the process?
The process involves using abrasives and primers to thoroughly prepare the surface, whether it is MDF, bare, waxed, or lacquered wood as well as acrylic, melamine and foil-wrapped laminate.
Once they have been primed, the chosen colour in your desired finish – whether it’s gloss, satin or matt – can be applied.
Is spray painting better?
Spray painting kitchens and hand-painting them are entirely distinct processes that produce different results, so it is difficult to say one is superior to the other.
The main difference between them is the time it takes to complete, and the final look they achieve.
Spray painting a kitchen, as the name suggests, refers to using a spray paint gun in a factory to coat the cabinets and doors.
The surfaces are sprayed evenly, in layers, to create a seamless and smooth finish every time.
Homeowners who are aiming to create a more contemporary look to their kitchen will often prefer spray painting’s finish.
However, in a more traditional setting, it can look flat and out of place.
The process typically takes up less time, which means the job is done a few days earlier than a hand-painted kitchen, but if the surface is damaged it cannot be resprayed in your home.
In hand-painted kitchens, on the other hand, kitchen cabinets and doors are painted by hand using a brush for smaller sections and a roller for larger surfaces.
This process can be carried out in a workshop or, unlike spray painting, on site.
It usually takes longer because it is more intricate, but the biggest benefit is that it can be customised to suit your kitchen.
Not only that, any touchups can be done without having to take a cabinet, or its door, back to a factory or workshop.
Common mistakes
When hand-painting your kitchen, there are a range of common mistakes that people can make.
The biggest is rushing straight into it with a tin of paint and hoping it will turn out just right.
Any professional painter will tell you that hand-painting a kitchen takes time, energy, patience and, above all, the right materials.
Before paint ever touches a cabinet, you will need to have removed, cleaned, sanded and primed them.
You will also need to ensure you have the appropriate paint for the job, enough time to finish it (on average four to seven days) and be patient enough to allow them to dry before re-installing them.
If you are not willing to put in the time that it takes to complete the work by following each of these steps, then we would always recommend contacting a specialist kitchen painter.
