man measuring

Getting out your tape measure is the first thing you should when embarking on your new kitchen project, so that you can work out just how much space you have to play with.

Accurate measurements are key to a successful installation, whether you are hiring a professional or doing the job yourself, as these will ensure that all the components fit together seamlessly. And don’t so a rush job. Instead, take your time when measuring each area – you really don’t want to miss anything out! In this article we discover how to measure for a new kitchen.

What measurements do I need for a new kitchen?

How to measure for a new kitchen is definitely something you need to know before you begin. You don’t really require any specialist equipment. A good old tape measure, a straight edge and grid paper should suffice (although if you wan to go all high-tech, laser levels and laser distance measures can be used).

Once you’re armed with these the first thing to do is draw an outline of your existing kitchen on a large sheet of grid paper, then use your diagram to note down the base measurements.

Width

Take a width measurement – not just in one place but at the bottom, middle and top of the wall where it meets at the ceiling.

Height

Now measure the height of the wall, again not just in one place but at the corners and at the corners and in the middle, to accommodate any variations.

Squareness

Check corner ‘squareness’ at the floor, base and wall cabinet levels to determine if you will have any issues during installation.

Doorways

You now need to measure the distance from the corner of the walls to the edge of the door surrounds, the total width of the doorway including the trim around the edge and the height.

Windows

Measure from the corner of the walls to the edge of the window surrounds then the width and height including the trim and then the distance from the bottom edge of the window to the floor.

Pipes and other features

You also need to take into account vents, switches and pipes as they need to be marked out. You should again measure from the corner of the wall to the centre of each feature.

How to calculate the size of a kitchen

Calculating the size of the kitchen is all part of how to measure for a new kitchen and it’s quite easy. To figure out how many square metres space you have you need to measure the length and width of the floor space in metres then multiply the two figures.

How to measure a kitchen for a renovation

As well as doing all of the above you…

Need to note down existing plumbing, electrical and lighting centrelines on all walls.
Measure any free-standing items that you intend to keep in the kitchen.
Call in an electrician to ensure that your wiring can cope with the demands of any new appliances.

How do you measure a kitchen for a quote?

Ideally, you need a drawing of the kitchen as explained above, including upstands, splashbacks, windowsills and their dimensions, the height and width of walls and details of how many cut outs are needed on work surfaces, as well as what kind of edge you would prefer – bevelled for example.
