It hasn’t been named “the smallest room” without reason. Bathrooms have been traditionally quite compact until recently, when they have been reimagined as spaces for relaxation as well as function.
So, if you do have a bathroom that’s dimensionally challenged, chances are you’re feeling more than a little bit envious of those luxurious spa like spaces to be found between the pages of glossy interiors magazines. But that’s because you’re not thinking outside the box. With a little imagination and a soupcon of inspiration it’s possible to create an enviably beautiful room to meet both your practical and aesthetic needs.

What looks good in a small bathroom?

You’ll be surprised at just how effective the right kind of small bathroom designs can be. There are rules you can follow to create space using light, hues and mirror, but you can also break the rules to create a unique look for the room.

Here are a few tips to help you make your small bathroom look fabulous:

1) Use the same tiles on the wall and floor
The flow between tiles on the floor and walls creates an illusion of space.

2) Install a mini wet room
Dare you ditch the bath? If you prefer a shower then why not free up space and create a sense of space with a beautiful designer shower, loo and basin.

3. Use darker colours
Yes. This is what we mean about breaking the rules, but while bright neutrals are brilliant for creating a sense of space, darker shades are more cocooning and sexier, especially bathed in softer, lighting (just make sure you have a brighter light that can be switch on over the bathroom mirror). An opulent wallpaper looks good too. Botanicals, which were big in 2023 will still be on trend for 2024, so dark green paint, foliage design, or dramatic floral wall covering will all make an impact.

4. Add reflective surfaces
We’re talking illuminated mirrors and reflective surfaces. Choose glossy cabinets, shiny tiles, or flooring for a luxury look that also makes the room look bigger.

5. Install a slipper bath
You’d love a standard roll top bath but don’t have the space? Why not consider a slipper bath instead? These are available in a shorter size but will make the same kind of statement as a standalone roll top.

Smaller bathroom designs are so much about personal taste so don’t feel that you need to follow trends if you love dark colours and statement wallpapers.

What pattern makes a small bathroom look bigger?

White surfaces are perfect for reflecting light, but you don’t have to stick to a monochrome palette. You can use it in conjunction with beautiful, patterned wall tiles without making your space look cramped. For underfoot, a horizontal tile pattern will give the illusion that your floor space is wider than it actually is, effectively making the smaller bathroom look larger.

What colour makes a small bathroom look bigger?

If space is at a premium then a lighter, brighter colour will make your bathroom space look bigger. The trend recently has been for white glossy tiling, but this kind of minimal look isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Neutral hues like taupe and cream will still make your small bathroom look larger but less austere – and if you do want to go darker you can increase the feel of spaciousness by adding mirrors and reflective surfaces.

How can I make my small bathroom look expensive?

Lighting
Install attractive lighting over your basin area, and if you’re going for a more luxe look, install a statement light, such as a mini chandelier.

Mini wet room
You’re getting rid of the bath but you’re gaining a statement shower space. A state-of-the-art shower will definitely make your bathroom look high end.

Invest in wall mounted fixtures
By mounting cabinets on your walls, you can free up floor space and make your bathroom look more contemporary into the bargain.

Indulge in bathroom accessories
To give your bathroom a more luxurious or designer look splurge on your taps and other accessories. Copper, rose gold and black are amongst the coolest looks at the moment.

Opulent wallpaper
Create a high-end look with a gorgeous expensive wallcovering. Again, it’s all about creating a cocooning feel. Statement wallcovering will add warmth and harmony and will compliment those shiny new fixtures. Who cares if your bathroom is limited in space. It may be small, but it will be beautiful.
